About Adamjee Eye Hospital
The Adamjee Foundation has recently set up the
Adamjee Eye Hospital in Adamjee Nagar, Karachi.
The Adamjee Eye Hospital is a community welfare
project providing comprehensive eye care which includes diagnostic,
preventive, medical, surgical and laser facilities. Technical and
Human Resource support has been provided by the Aga Khan
University Hospital and we are conveniently located close
to AKUH.
The guiding principles of our hospital are provision of the highest
quality eye care which can be accessed by most individuals,
including those with very low incomes. The hospital works on a true
non-profit basis. The objective of our eye care
program is to treat major ailments that cause preventable blindness.
Many of these diseases are left untreated due to the high cost of
treatment or non-availability of the required equipment or human
resources.
We are able to provide excellent surgical care. We have automated
visual field testing for glaucoma patients and are equipped with
the appropriate lasers on site to provide treatment for diabetic
retinopathy should it be indicated. Diabetic retinopathy is now
the second largest cause of avoidable blindness after cataract.
We believe 75% of people who go blind are avoidable and this could
be prevented. Adamjee Eye Hospital is committed to prevention
of avoidable blindness and our “Community Outreach
Program” has trained doctors and staff who reaches out by
going on site to those people who have no access to comprehensive
eye care facilities. They will screen, diagnose, and refer those
patients requiring surgical or medical treatment to our hospital.
This outreach program is unique as we transport patients from distant
areas to our hospital to be treated in an infection free environment
and in a well-equipped facility. The program has started successfully
in interior Sindh and in the very poor areas of Karachi.
We are also screening school children in poor areas for refractive
and other congenital eye problems to ensure that these are treated
at an early age. We believe that early intervention and access to
quality eye care are crucial so that children can achieve their
full potential. Loss of sight and low vision can lead to terrible
consequences that effect self esteem and opportunities.
